Well, we checked another thing off our Bucket List. There’s only 2 things left and we only have a couple days left in Colorado so I thought I would share this. We originally planned to go up to the DOD Warrior Games but that doesn’t fit our schedule so we drove up to check it out on our own. The first thing we noticed was how hilly the campus was. Like it is in the foothills of the Rockies and running around the campus sounded miserable.
If you’re just wanting to tour the campus, you should park at the visitor’s center and check out the inside before walking the trail to the chapel and campus area. Inside the visitor’s center, there’s a short video about cadet life which Hubs was tickled by. He went to the Virginia Military Institute so cadet life is near and dear to his heart. There’s also a replica dorm room and Hubs commented on how “lucky” the cadets are because they had real beds versus at VMI where you have to roll your mattress up daily. I told him he should have gone to a real college and not been a full time cadet but what can you do?
There’s a nice trail to get to the campus and it is really pretty. The website warned that the trail is “mostly uphill” but really, the kids handled it just fine. They made it sound like it was the Manitou Incline or something. While there are hills surrounding the campus, this walk is pretty and easy for even a 3 year old.
The campus itself was closed off so you needed a cadet to walk around the quad but that was okay. We toured the chapel and it was insane. My mom once told me she wanted to get married here but it didn’t work out and I can see why. It is pretty from the outside and wild on the inside. The Protestant chapel is on the first floor and it was like a space ship. The Catholic chapel is in the basement and was much more muted in it’s decor but it still had some sweet stained glass.
Overall it was a great little visit. You can see the Academy from the highway and finally getting around to walking it was a nice experience. If you’re ever in Colorado Springs, you should totally check it out!
