The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has an additional attraction. Not only does you ticket get you into the zoo, you can also gain access to the Shrine of the Sun. It’s this church type thing halfway up Cheyenne Mountain. It is named for Will Rogers. We went to it the same day as the Teddy Bear Day and it was pretty cool. It’s about 5 stories up and the big kids insisted on running up the stairs which makes me crazy because one of my worst fears is falling off a mountain. I don’t know why but it is.
Once you get to the top, there is an observation deck and along the balcony edge are signs that tell you where you are looking. We could see Fort Carson no problem and could even see where our house is! It was pretty cool to be able to see a “bird’s eye view” of the surrounding area. When we were on the top of Pike’s Peak, we just had to guess at what we were looking at so the plaques were so helpful.
Overall it was a fun, quick little trip. We even saw a baby black bear in the woods as we drove! If you happen to hit up the zoo, be sure to take an hour to drive up to the shine. It was totally worth it!
