Arguably the must see thing in Kauai is Waimea Canyon. It’s called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific and so we knew it was the first thing we wanted to do. Although Hanapepe was on the way, so we actually stopped there first. As we drove over to Waimea, it was a beautiful drive. Kauai is much smaller than Oahu and we pretty much drove from half the circumference of the island as we headed to the canyon.
The canyon itself is ridiculous. It’s amazing. We didn’t think it was going to be anything great but it took our breath away. It was so big and beautiful. The pictures do not do it justice. It’s so huge, it looks almost 2 dimensional until a bird flies by. After we looked around for a while, we kept heading north to see some more sights.
The Pu’u Hinahina lookout was a little bonus. We didn’t know what it was when we stopped, we just knew there was a bathroom (thanks pregnancy). From the lookout, we were able to see Nihau aka the Forbidden Island. It’s the closest you can get unless you’re a part of the Robinson family so it was a nice bonus. You can just see the island on the horizon in the second picture.
We continued up the road to the Kalalua Valley Lookout and boy was that thing amazing. For some reason, I thought it would just be another view of the canyon but it was the other side, so it was lush and green and right near the ocean. We snapped a few pictures and then headed to Waimea town for a late lunch plate of garlic shrimp.
Our first day in Kauai was amazing. Stay tuned for a recap of our second day!
