As you may have heard, we’re getting ready to move. Moving is tough for any kid, watching their whole house get put into boxes and then sleeping in strange places. This is especially tough for Piglet who thrives on routine. We decided to do a weekend craft to create something that the kids can take from our house, to the hotel, to our new house. Using a tie dye kit from the store and a couple of white pillowcases, we made a fun keepsake and entertained the kids for the afternoon.
All you need is a pillowcase and some fabric dye. I picked up a 2 pack of white pillowcases and 2 tie dye kits.
First, you’ll need some fabric dye. Before you color your pillowcases, pre-wash them. Using 100% cotton ones will give you the best results. I got these kits that came with 3 colors each. We made up the colors and then placed the pillowcases on a tarp in the yard. I initially thought the kids would draw some fun designs on the pillowcases but they quickly just because a “dump all of 1 color in a section of the pillow.” Kids man. Our yard is also on a slight hill so when Piglet’s dye started running down, I moved Blueberry’s pillowcase to the grass so hers didn’t get his dye on it.
Once the kids were done (aka the dye was gone), I rolled up the pillowcases and put them in a plastic bag as per the instructions on the box. You were supposed to let the dye set for 6-9 hours but I forgot about them and they went overnight. Whoops. Run the pillowcases through some cold water and you’re done! I rinsed mine out in the sink and when the water was mostly clear, I put them in the washer on rinse and spin one at a time to get the extra dye off.
After a trip in the dryer, they’re done! The kids are very excited about them and once we get to the hotel, they will be ready for use. If you’re doing a road trip and taking your own pillows, these are also great because they will alert the maid in your hotel that the pillow does not belong to them.
What about you, have you ever done a special craft for a move or vacation?
