There are a lot of hikes here in Hawaii. Besides the beach, it’s one of the main things to do here. Unfortunately because our kids are so small, there are few we have done as a family. Usually we get our sitter to come over and then we just do it alone. Our sitter told us that Manoa Falls was a great one for the kids because it’s not long and it’s not steep. It’s also partnered with the University of Hawaii and they have been overtaking a restoration project so the trail is maintained really nicely.
When you first arrive, there is a $5 fee to park and then you walk along a road until you reach the gate to enter the trail. There are 6 spots along the trail that have informational signs about the plant and animal life. It’s a roundtrip 1.5 miles so it only took us about an hour. Neither of the kids wanted to get muddy and this trail is a muddy one so that was a little problematic at first but they got over it. Eventually.
The falls were a little small on the day we went. It hasn’t been raining very much so that impacts how big the waterfall is but it was still cool to see it. A lot of people were going up to the falls and taking pictures standing under it but we did not. I mean, it’s roped off for a reason people! As soon as I took a few pictures, Piglet said it was time to go and so we did. There’s a little snack place and restrooms at the start of the trail so we had a potty break and grabbed some shave ice before driving home.
All in all, it was a nice way to spend the morning. If you need a kid friendly hike on Oahu, this is one to hit up!
