I have wanted a Roomba for years. Pretty much since I knew they existed. Wooden (even “wood” floors in military housing) and cats do not mix. Between their hair, tiny bits of kitty litter, plus my kids and their snacks that make it all over the downstairs. Even if I say a thousand times to sit at the table, cereal still gets every where. Which means that I sweep a lot. Every morning. After every meal. It’s annoying and honestly, ain’t no body got time for that.
Hub had a bunch of hotel rewards that he cashed into Amazon gift cards and I had some from using Swagbucks and I finally convinced him that it was time to get the Roomba. I mean, he loves sweeping and mopping (no lie) but he is also human who doesn’t like doing chores. He thought the Roomba would scare the kids and the cats and be really loud. I argued that it was okay and everyone could get over it. So we ordered this one which was bundled with this at the time.
First of all, it was able to be shipped to Hawaii. I previously wanted to get a Bissel robot because it was cheaper but Amazon wouldn’t ship it to me so that was upsetting. Once we got the Roomba, Hubs set it up and we got it going. There was no charging time on the initial run. We also did not prepare our living space for the Roomba so it ran for an hour and a half without finishing. Finally, Hubs pushed the “dock” button and it went home.
Hubs was right about almost everything. It is noisy. It’s a vacuum, it makes noise. And the cats were freaked out but they just went upstairs so it was no big deal really. He was wrong about the kids though. They found it hilarious and Mac literally chased it down. In fact, we can’t keep it docked and plugged in because he will crawl over and turn it on.
Since the Roomba ran for so long on it’s initial run without finishing, we had to make some changes to our house. Our living room, dining room, and kitchen are all open so before we leave the house, we pick up EVERYTHING. Cat beds, toys, the chairs, everything. The less obstacles the Roomba has to navigate, the faster it will be able to clean the floor.
The Roomba also comes with this little black box. It created a 10 inch bubble and the Roomba will avoid the area. It’s like an electric fence to prevent the Roomba from going there. We put it in the entrance to the laundry room which protects the cat food and stops it from going in the room and getting trapped. We once forgot to close the bathroom door and the poor robot couldn’t get out and died in the bathroom. Whoops. Once everything is set up, you just press the “clean” button. The Roomba will sing a little song that sounds like a countdown and off it goes.
We let the Roomba go before heading out for errands or to go to the park or whatever. Anytime we’ll be gone for at least an hour, the Roomba gets to run. And I love it. The floor is amazingly clean when you get home and when you open the hatch and clean it out, you can see just how many dust bunnies it killed. We haven’t used the cleaning kit or extra filters yet but the one it came with is meant to last 6 months with normal use.
I am so excited that we finally got this. It has made our floors so much better. If you have kids or pets or both, you definitely need one.
