I recently heard a commercial for Boar’s Head deli meats and how they are all natural, just meat and other deli meats have “food starch” in them. At first, I was like “no way! lunch meat is the same!”
No. No it’s not.
My old standby, Oscar Mayer in the pre-cut section has “food starch” added plus corn syrup. Why? It’s turkey. Cook it up, slice it up, package it. Why add sh*t? I have no idea.
So, I decided I wanted to just eat meat and not other crap and I while looking for some lunch meat, I quickly found that nothing in the pre-cut section was just straight up meat. Maybe because I was at the commissary and not an organic store but every single brand had added food starch. Barf.
I have no idea where there’s an organic food store around here so I went to the deli counter. Holy wow, deli meat is expensive. $9.99 a pound! Are those island prices? Who knows? I asked the lady for a list of ingredients for 3 different meat from Boar’s Head. Ingredients: meat, water, spices/seasoning.
Done and done.
I got a half pound of each. I honestly felt so fancy. Look at me, I order from the deli counter! Whoo!
When I got home, I made a sandwich and you know what, it really did taste better. Fresher? I don’t know. Something about knowing that it was just chicken and not any added junk, made me feel better about eating it.
So, there’s that. A small step we’ve taken to eat healthier and supporting food products that add weird crap to me food.
What steps have you taken to eat healthier?
