So, I have tried upcycling clothes into t-shirts for Piglet before. I tried to take an old t-shirt of The Hubster’s and make one for Piglet but it never quite worked because I was following directions for drafting my own pattern – which I cannot do. I don’t know why, the directions are easy enough but I guess I just can’t draw very well. I can take old clothes and make pants no problem but making shirts from drafting was too hard.
FINALLY, I found a sewing pattern for t-shirts, pants, and jumpers all in knit and decided to buy it. I then went through my clothes for some knit things to upcycle. I can never find knit at the fabric store. I have no idea why. Can you find knits? Is it because I live in the middle of Knowwheresville, KY?
I used a maxi skirt that no longer fits. In fact, it never really did. I bought it from Gap to wear while pregnant, it was a little big the 2 times I wore it and I thought it would fit better when I got bigger but I never got big enough (I know, tragedy) so I never wore it again.
I sewed the shirt while Piglet was sleeping. At first, everything was going great. The collar is always the most twitchy part. At least that’s what I thought, until I sewed the first sleeve on. I did it inside out. As in, the seam on the outside. Oops. Have you ever tried ripping the seam after serging something? No? Well, it sucks.
So, I went with it and sewed the other sleeve on “wrong” and then hemmed the sleeves towards the outside. I think it adds character.
And thankfully it fits and looks adorable.
Yay for my first upcycling success!
Also, taking pictures of a 2 year old is becoming increasingly difficult. :p
