It’s the end of April (well almost) and we finally squeezed in our STEM activity for the month. We used a lemon to make a clock. Get it squeeze? LOL Anyway, I’ve been working a lot and traveling so when I asked what STEM we were doing, Hubs picked an easy one. Poor Piglet was sick over the weekend so it was just Mac and Bberry this time around.
This one was fairly simple, you used some zinc and 2 forks to make a circuit between the 2 sides of the lemon and the clock face. Mac kept trying to eat the lemon and so we had to make him sit on the other side of the table until the clock making time was done. The experiment was pretty neat. I never made a potato clock growing up so I was skeptical of this lemon business but science showed me what was up.
After we got the clock going, we let the kids play with the experiment. First Mac tried to eat the lemon and then he decided he didn’t need the zinc and was just going to stick the wires straight into the lemon. Bberry tried to make the clock work using just 1 half of the lemon and got the clock to light up which she thought was pretty cool.
Overall, April was a pretty low-key STEM activity but it was still fun. Piglet watched from the couch and was kind of sad so I hope next month he is able to participate some more.
What about you? Have you ever made a clock from a vegetable?
