Do you guys want to know a secret? Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love the food and the relaxing day, no responsibilities, no getting dressed. It’s pretty awesome. I decorated our house with fall-themed things, like our pumpkins but I thought the table needed something. A nice centerpiece that was all about Thanksgiving since a lot of our decorations are Halloween-ish. So, I checked out Oriental Trading and of course, they had just what I needed.
Step One and Two
I used their DIY flower box and leftover paint from our pumpkin painting party so that the color theme would transfer from living room to dining room. It took a couple coats and I let it dry overnight. Painting tip: put down some wooden sticks to prevent your box from sticking to the paper towel or drop cloth you happen to be using. No paper fuzzies stuck to my box! The next day, I used my digital cutting machine to cut out the word “thankful” on some permanent adhesive vinyl and then got my assistant to work.
Step 3 and 4
Using a smoothing tool and transfer paper, smooth out the word so that you can take from the vinyl sheet to the wooden box. Once it’s nice and stuck, line it up onto your box how you want and use the smoothing tool to rub all parts of the word. Since I had a very swirly font, I had to take extra care to make sure everything stuck before I slowly peeled away the transfer paper. You can run the smoothing tool over it once more to ensure a good stick. Next, take some foam blocks that you find on the silk flower aisle and place them inside the box. This will keep your decorative items up where everyone can admire them.
I got the metallic pumpkins and 2 sets of the glitter votives from Oriental Trading and arranged the medium size votives along with the metallic pumpkins in the box, the small and large voties looked great on the outside on a table runner I sewed last year. I used fake candles because they last longer and tiny fingers won’t burn themselves when they inevitably touch the centerpiece – even though they know they shouldn’t. The final step is to let your assistant take a picture with her work. lol But seriously, Blueberry loves when we get an Oriental Trading box in (or as she calls it, the Pink Flamingo Store) because she knows it’s craft time!
I love how this turned out. It is exactly like I imagined! Are you into crafting for the season? Have you made anything fun? I’d love to see!
