Well, we knocked off another thing on our bucket list! This was a tricky one because since moving here, Hubs has been obsessed with the Colorado Rapids. And there’s a baseball team and the Broncos are just up the road but when we found out the Virginia Military Institute was going to be playing the Air Force Academy, we knew this would satisfy our sporting event goal. Hubs is a proud VMI grad and there was an alumni event going on that day so we got a sitter and rolled up north.
Thanks to a suggestion from Janelle, we ate lunch at Salsa Brava before heading to the stadium. The meal was amazing and put us in a good mood for the upcoming game. Hubs knew VMI was going to lose but by halftime it was like 45-0. We met up with some of the other VMI people and talked throughout the halftime show – where an Air Force cadet did a really crappy impression of an Australian accent to mock the VMI mascot, the kangaroo, so rude. Anyway….
We had pretty good seats. The only bad part was that we were surrounded by AFA Alumnus who talked no end of shit about VMI and how it isn’t a “real military college” and they laughed with our quarterback got knocked out and had to be taken off the field on a backboard. I’m all about ribbing the opposing team and my fellow services but come on. VMI commissions Air Force people too! They were a bunch of old men being rude.
Since we just saw the stadium and the drive to the stadium, we will need to go back to tour the campus. There is a trail from the welcome center to the chapel that is a great way to see the campus so hopefully we can go back soon to see the history of the campus. And not hear a bunch of old men heckling 18 year olds.
