Y’all, I have a big family. I know, you’re shocked. Four kids and 2 adults in 1 house. That’s a lot of people. And do you know what these people do? They eat. Everyday. Like what? I fed you yesterday! Yuk yuk yuk. I remember when I was like 9, my younger brother was old enough to eat grown up food and my parents lamented that we were now a 2 can of green beans family. As in, 1 can no longer cut it. We are there now and so I thought I would share how I keep these hooligans fed.
The main thing is, we shop at Sam’s Club. We used to use Costco in Hawaii but there isn’t one close to us here so Sam’s it is. We got a deal as a military family so ask them when you sign up. We got a free gift card. Right now, I am in Texas for some Army professional development and before I left, I told Hubs I would restock the kitchen for him so this is a small trip to Sam’s. None of my gluten free stuff is pictured and no fresh vegetables because we didn’t have time to meal plan before I went. So just know I usually get my GF flour (and if they have pasta, I get that too) there and we get mushrooms, broccoli, and other veggies. We also get diapers and wipes as needed.
The biggest thing we get is meat. The other day, I made some luscious lemon chicken and put 5 thighs in the crockpot and it wasn’t enough. So, we buy our meat in bulk and then break down the packages into meal serving sizes. I like to wrap them in foil before sticking them in freezer bags (also found at Sam’s!) and then into the freezer they go. We usually buy a month’s worth of meat at a time. The only thing we may need to resupply midmonth is chicken but that’s not a huge deal. I also usually buy a bag of frozen shrimp too but we already had a bag on hand so I didn’t. And this is just dinner meats. Our local Safeway has BOGO meats all the time that we get and cook up for our lunches.
The biggest part about shopping for a big family is getting as much as we can at one time. As you can see, my freezer is FULL. And that included the additional drawer you can’t see. But having all these proteins on hand makes meal planning easier. We brainstorm what vegetable side and how to flavor the food on Saturdays and if we need anything small, we hit up Safeway but our main effort is at Sam’s.
Do you shop at one of the club stores? Have you tried one of the ones that mail you food? I’d love to hear your strategy!
