One of the things on our Bucket List is to spend a day or two in Manitou. After driving through it several times and tackling the incline, we decided to check it out. I am on the hunt for a piece of artwork featuring Pikes Peak so armed with suggestions from people who used to live here, we thought this would be a great place. We parked in the free parking lot and walked up into the town. It’s got the hippie vibe of Haleiwa with the tourist trap vibe of Gatlinburg. Perfect for us.
The town is a historic site so there are all kinds of plaques and information around. Hubs loves those kind of things. We also got to the town around 1030 and most places still had not opened up. If you thought Island Time was slow, try Manitou Time. :p But we got the chance to explore before the stores really opened up.
All around town are several springs with mineral water pouring out. There’s a total of 8 I think and all boast a variety of health benefits and unique flavors. We tried the first one we saw and as you can see, Hubs was not a fan. It tasted like flat soda water. I guess we’re not hip to the mineral waters.
We grabbed some lunch at a Mexican place in the middle of town and it was good. Kind of, I got sick later that night but I don’t know if there was cross-contamination or what. We also checked out a couple more stores but ultimately, we only left with 2 shirts and hats for the big kids. Still no Pikes Peak artwork. Darn.
Do you ever check out local town and play tourist? It’s one of my favorite things!
