Let’s talk about the weather. Colorado is not Hawaii. Obviously. It gets cold here. It’s windy all the time, which means that my kids now need to wear coats. I know, it’s crazy. Here’s the thing though, wearing a coat is not compatible with being safely buckled into a car seat. What’s a parent to do? Take their coats on and off during our trips? No. I have 4 kids, that would add so much more time to my Target shopping trips so I made them a poncho. Once they are safely buckled up, toss this over their head and it’s like a soft blanket they can wear. The big kids can do this themselves and since Mac likes to toss blankets off, this works well to keep him warm.
Want to make one for your kiddo? They’re ridiculously easy. All you need is 1-1.5 yards of fleece, matching thread, and a sewing machine. For a 1-2 year old, cut out 2 20 inch squares and a length of fleece 2 inches wide. For my 4 year old, I cut out 2 25 inch squares and for my 6 year old, I did 28 inch squares.
On the front square, cut out a notch as seen in the first picture. For the back, cut the tip off one corner. This will create the neck hole when we sew it.
Lay the fabric together with the right sides on the inside and pin the edges from the neck down to form the shoulder seams and sew them.
Since fleece doesn’t fray, to sew the hem you only need to fold over each side about a 1/4 of on inch and sew them. You will have 2 hems on each side to sew.
To create a more finished collar, take your 2 inch piece of fleece and fold over one of the long sides. With the right side of the poncho and the wrong side of the strip lined up, sew around the neckline. Once complete, fold over the strip on the inside of the poncho, gathering up all the layers of the collar on the inside. This will create a sturdier neckline and make the poncho look finished.
And that’s it! You’re done. It took me about an hour to sew 3 ponchos for my older kids.
Once you’ve strapped your kiddo into their chair, just toss the poncho over their head and they’ll be riding in warmth and style.
Now that we’ve got our ponchos, let’s go to Target! I recently picked up the Graco 4Ever™ 4-in-1 Car Seat in the exclusive Nova print. From now until December 3, you can save $75 on the 4Ever 4-in-1 Car Seat.
I love this car seat. The only car seats I have ever used are from Graco and this one is pretty awesome. It has Simply Safe Adjust Harness which features a one-hand, no rethread harness that automatically adjusts the height of the harness and the headrest. Any parent can tell you, that is the worst so being able to adjust the harness without removing the car seat is simply amazing. It also is the only car seat your child will need. All 4 of my children – from the newborn to the 6 year old can be kept safe in this seat.
You can check out all the features in the video below.
Have you wanted to try out the Graco 4Ever™ 4-in-1 Car Seat? This sale is the perfect time! And if you make a poncho for your little one, leave a picture in the comments – I’d love to see it!
