Well friends, it finally happened. Our little Nugget is here!
When I got pregnant, it was kind of a surprise and being busy moving off an island and buying a house, I never really had a moment to sit and think “yep, I’m pregnant.” While my belly got bigger and I was more tired, I never gained any weight and I never actually felt pregnant until the last month. Once October hit, I was feeling the pregnancy. My other boys came 3-4 days late and I figured this one would also be late (Blueberry was induced 4 days early so who knows where she would have arrived). My mom arrived and we got busy walking and cleaning and trying to get Nugget to come out on his own. My mom was set to leave on the 27th, which was the soonest the hospital here would schedule an induction so I didn’t want to have to use that date.
But we needed it. Nugget was determined not to come on his own so on the morning of the 27th, we checked into the hospital and luckily I was dilated enough that I didn’t need any think to help that started. We started on my antibiotics (I have tested positive for Strep Group B every.single.time) and they kicked on the Pitocin. After 4 hours, my first antibiotics dose was done and the midwife came and checked me again. I was only at a 4! We got the Pitocin going more and after a couple more hours, the midwife came back and asked how I was doing.
I was starting to get uncomfortable and she wanted to break my water but not before I had my epidural so we got that in and she broke my water. Her shift was over at 7 pm and she seemed to know I would deliver before that. At 4, I was at 6cm. An hour after that, she came back with a med student and checked me again. The med student was tested as to my status and he shyly guessed “9cm?” The midwife was like, try again. And he admitted that it was probably at a 10. Huzzah! Yes, it was go time.
At about 5:50, I did a couple practice pushes while the midwife and med student got their gowns on. The midwife came over and we got down to the real pushing. After 2 pushes, she said she could see about a quarter-sized piece of his head. I was bummed. I thought he was closer to being all the way out. She asked me to push again on the next contraction and the suddenly his head was out. He was facing at the 4 pm position so she had to turn his head to the 6 pm to get his shoulders out as I did another push. Nugget was completely out at 6:10 pm on October 27th. So fast.
I could not believe how fast it was. I also was really worried that he would be super big because he was a week late. The midwife guessed from the outside that he would be less than 7 but once he was out, she was like “oh no, he’s like 7.5” Hubs guessed 7 lbs 12 oz and was off by 1. Nugget was 7 lbs 13 oz and 21 inches long. My biggest baby. Each baby has gotten about 1/2 a pound bigger so before he was late, I anticipated him being 7 lbs 11 oz. Not too shabby for the guessing game.
Since he was born after 5 pm, we had to stay an additional night and couldn’t go home until Saturday morning. Whatever. I was so ready to bust out of that place, if they weren’t going to let us go home, I was going to cut the baby lo-jack off myself and walk out. Just kidding. Halfway anyway.
This labor was pretty easy and the delivery was probably the easiest but when you’ve done it before, I guess that makes sense. It was my longest pregnancy and since it’s my last, I guess he just wanted to make it last. 😉
