When we first looked at this house, we were doing so online. The old owners had professional pictures taken of everything and it looked really nice. We were excited about the backyard because it is large and has a nice play structure for the kids. During the home inspection, the inspector noted that portions of the yard had to be landscaped. Hubs said he wanted to do it himself so we didn’t include it in the list of things we wanted fixed. When saw the house, we were like “oh crap, this is going to be a lot of work.” It’s like they had professional pictures taken and then never touched it again.
We decided that we would keep the grassy area and the two areas on the side. We may plant some vegetables next spring but as of right now, we just laid down some liner and mulch. Since the yard had not been cared for, we had about 100,000 grasshoppers in our yard and I don’t want that many again so hopefully with less overgrowth, they won’t be back in such large numbers next year.
These are all before from the larger portion. All that brush was standing but Hubs ripped it all down before I could take a picture. There was also a half-baked attempted to make a compost so we had to shovel out moss and egg shells from the yard. It was super weird.
And there’s the after. Hubs did this part over 2.5 days on a long weekend. It took forever. Four trips to Lowe’s for about 100 bags of mulch. It was insane. But it looks great. We’re going to set up our cornhole field in this area too so when we have guests, we’ll always be ready. Well Hubs will, he’s the one who is good at cornhole.
This is the side yard where all the grasshoppers were. It only took a day and much, much less mulch. This was actually the first side he did and was back when Blueberry was still excited and motivated to help. That did not last through to the larger side. Oh well. Hubs ripped all those wildflowers up and my allergies thanked him for that.
I think it turned out great! We’re probably going to keep this side just mulch. It’s small and on a slope. I thought this would have made a better cornhole field but with the slope, it wouldn’t be fair. Oh well. We’ll just have a nice rectangle of mulch then. 😉
