When we went snorkeling our first year here, I checked it off the bucket list and didn’t think much about it. Breathing into the snorkel makes me freak out a little bit because I’m underwater but I’m still breathing. I know, it’s silly. Hubs on the other hand really liked snorkeling and has wanted to go do it again. He had a Friday off and so I arranged for our sitter to come a little early and we drove over to Hanauma Bay. It’s a nature reserve and is an incredibly popular snorkeling spot. We got there early and the line was already super long. But we hung out, watched the safety video, and headed down to the beach. It was an overcast day and was sprinkling so the water wasn’t as clear as it might usually be but we still saw a lot of fish and I ended up have a really great time.
I was hoping to see a honu or two but we didn’t. The safety video we watched had octopus and eels but we didn’t see any those. Thankfully because I nearly ran into a parrotfish, screamed, and almost choked to death. An eel or octopus probably would have given me a heart attack.
Overall, it was a great morning. The most stressful part about swimming at Hanauma Bay is that you are not supposed to stand or kick the coral. As you know, coral is alive so kicking it just hurts it. We did pretty good not touching it, although I did swim too close to a piece once but we were way better than some of the other people we saw. Some chick was WALKING along the coral with FINS on. It was insane. Like, come on! She wasn’t even trying!
Anyway, have you ever been to Hanauma Bay? Or snorkeling somewhere else?
