This is Koko Head Crater. The bottom of the hiking trail. I have previously attempted to climb it. It has also made several appearances and disappearances to the Hawaiian Bucket List. Hubs has done it, 8 times? And I wanted to do it before we moved.
So I woke up before the sun came up and drove us out there. I was already nervous. I hate driving in the dark. But we made it when it was light but the sun wasn’t quite up. The chase was on to get to the top before the sun.
But I made it! I thought I was going to die. Have you ever done a stairmaster workout? That is Koko Head. It’s straight up. No stopping. Oh, and when you reach the top, you still have to climb more to get to the VERY top to take pictures. I am so glad I made it to the top. Did I have to take breaks? Yes. Did I have to climb up some parts using the railroad ties as leverage? Yes. But I made it.
The views are amazing! Like many other hikes, this was once an outpost during World War II. There are 3 bunkers on the top and a sort of building that was once an office or maybe storage? I’m not sure, we didn’t go into it. The bunkers are of course spray painted with amazing artwork. There’s even a geocache in one of the trees!
After spending some time at the top, you have to go back down. Let me tell you, it’s worse. Going up is exhausting but going down is scary. I was so afraid I was going to go tumbling down but I took it slow and went with my feet sideways. Like Miley says, “It’s about the climb!”
Are you in Hawaii, have you done Koko Head Crater? Would you ever climb something this crazy?
