I don’t know about you, but I love giving gifts. Any holiday that has presents, I’m all about it. We’ve started giving the kids little valentine gifts but usually they’re just on the table, waiting for them when they wake up. This year, I decided to make a little envelope that hooks onto their chair so they can “unwrap” a little something. It took about 30 minutes and was super easy. Want to make one for your kiddo? Here’s how!
First off, you need some felt, sew-on velcro, and some fold-over-elastic (ribbon can work too but I found this FOE and fell in love with the design. I prefer to use sew-on velcro because I find the adhesive ones loose their stickiness over time and even up fall off. I got my felt in a big square off the bolt, but the rectangles you can find at most craft stores – and even Target nowadays – would work just fine. If you’re using the squares, you can skip Steps 1-3
Steps 1-3 are all about cutting the felt. First, with the felt folded in half, I cut off 12 inches. Then I cut that piece in half, and then in half again. My envelope takes 3 rectangles. You cut 4 so if you’re making more than one, you’ll already be one step closer.
For Step 4, cut a 1/2 of velcro and position one of the sides onto the wrong side of your FOE near the bottom. Sew the velcro in place. Step 5, position the opposite velcro pieces on the bottom of the felt and sew into place. Step 6, sew the tops of the felt together, sandwiching the non-velcroed side of the FOE. I stuck the FOE to the velcro on the bottom just to keep it in place, you want these edges free so you can attach your envelope to your chair. Once you have that portion sewn together, sew the side edges together and sew the flap to the top of the envelope. Turn the envelope right side out.
Step 7: I decided that I wanted to make the flap smaller and to have a little bit of detail so I used my pinking shears to cut a rounded edge. Step 8, you need to attach a small square velcro piece so you can keep your envelope secure. I also decided to cut a heart out of some white felt I had and I glued that on using fabric glue. Then, attach it to your kiddo’s chair and fill with goodies!
And there you have it, an easy and adorable way to send your kid’s a valentine.
Do you have any valentine crafts? I’d love to see!
