In Hawaii, there are a lot of “hot pot” places. It’s a big pot of broth, and you get to create your soup right at your table. It’s kind of like fondue, it’s an active meal. Of course this is not an easy meal to take 3 little kids to so I started looking into how we could do a hot pot at home. When Blogging for Books had Donabe available, I just knew I needed it.
It’s part recipe book, part history. I gobbled it up. And then I was dismayed to find out that you shouldn’t really just recreate the soups on your stove, no you need your own donabe. Well, I put it on my Christmas list and like they say “ask and you shall receive.” Now that I’ve got the pot, we just need a heat source since our house here has an electric top but we’re one step closer to my quest for Japanese Hot Pot!
Have you ever gone to a hot pot restaurant? Do you have a favorite recipe you’d like to share?
