At my house, there is a sheet of metal about a 1/2 inch around every outside wall. It’s a “termite barrier,” but I call it a curtains barrier because we are unable to drill our curtain rods in. This is not too bad because the blinds are nice; however, it makes for some ugly windows. I previously made Blueberry a fairy garland and Piglet has a robot one (that I never shared, whoops!) Mac got a different type of banner.
I found these adorable coasters on Zulily and knew they would be perfect as some kind of decor. Finally, after 8ish months, I figured it out and started decorating his room. Using some twine, mini clothespins, and paint, I was able to make a quick and cute decoration.
He has his name in wooden letters that is also in that green color so I decided to stick with it. Since we’re doing a woodland theme, the twine just felt right but you could use any ribbon that coordinates with the coasters you choose. My coasters are like mini-mousepads so they are very light weight and perfect for hanging.
The easiest way to paint them was to clip them onto a cardboard box. I was able to paint both sides and the inside of the handle part without getting any paint on myself or the table. I just left them to dry there. While they dried, I measured out the window and determined how much “hang” I wanted to have.
Clothespins usually have 2 holes in them while closed. I put the twine in the back hole and clipped the coaster into the main part. I thought I would need to put a drop of hot glue to help secure the twine but it was nice and snug. Consider using it if your ribbon or string is not tight enough. Otherwise, when you go to hang it, all the coasters will fall to the middle and won’t stay spaced out.
And now for some awkward photos! Did you know it’s hard to take a good picture of a window with the sun streaming in? Yeah. And the lighting in Mac’s room is pretty terrible too. Oh well, I hammered 2 nails into the edge of the windows and tied the twine to it. I put a piece of double-sided tape in the very center so I would have 2 little swoops.
Overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out. I’m sad I sat so long on this project – I ordered the coasters while I was still pregnant! What are some of your favorite “unconventional” decorating materials?
