On Sunday, the Honolulu Marathon took place. I was ready. I have been training for it basically since Macadamia Nut was born. We decided to stay downtown on Saturday and Sunday night to avoid the traffic. I packed up a breakfast that I could eat on my way to the start line: a bagel and cream cheese. I arrived at the starting line at like 2:30 am, the race was to start at 5 am.
While I waited, I ate my bagel. Around 3:30, I started to feel a little weird. I thought maybe it was nerves or that I needed to pee so I went and got in line for a port-a-potty. But I didn’t make it to the bathroom before I started throwing up. Four or 5 times, all my breakfast, all the water, everything. When I went to stand back up, I felt terrible. My stomach was twisted in knots and I was crying.
I walked the mile and a half back to my hotel. Threw up one more time and curled into a ball on the bed. It was terrible. Hubs got me some medicine and I still felt like garbage for the majority of the day.
We spent the morning relaxing by the pool. I was sipping on tea and soup. After lunch, we walked around downtown and I saw all the finishers with their t-shirts and medals and I felt so bad. I mean, I already felt crappy from my stupid bagel but now I felt like a failure.
Hubs assured me that I made the right decision to come back. Doing my first marathon with food poisoning probably wouldn’t have been a good idea but I still feel disappointed in myself. I told Hubs next time I train up for a marathon that he has to come with me.
And no bagels with cream cheese are allowed.
