If you recall, we got a puppy last month and it has been a whirlwind of learning. Truth time, I am not a puppy person. I grew up with cats and we have 3, I love them. They’re easy. When people say having a puppy is like having a toddler, I totally believe them now. Amelia Pond has mood swings, we had to potty train her, she needs exercise and attention. It really is like adding a new person.
I thought I would share some tips that I learned as well as a checklist so if you’re planning to add a puppy to your family, you’ll be ready.
First up, you need treats. For you and your puppy. Training a dog not to pee in the house can be challenging and having a little candy can make it easier on you. I love Starburst® as well as M&M’s® so these are perfect for me. For Amelia, we got Pedigree Dentastix® Original and Beef flavor. I chose to get the “toy” size ones so that we could use them as trainer treats. Walmart has a huge selection of sizes so if you need a bigger bite, they have what you need.
You can pick up all you need at Walmart and you can also download the Blippar app from your Apple or Android store to scan your package and receive exclusive content. Walmart is also Sharing a Little Funshine with an amazing sweepstakes and you can enter below!
Once you have your people and puppy treats, you need to pick up a couple other things. A kennel with a bed inside was a must. Amelia sleeps in it during the day, we call it her room. She also gets locked in it at night or if we’re leaving the house. Not everyone kennel trains their dogs but this works for us because Amelia is a cat food thief! We also gave her a fuzzy blanket to cuddle with and some balls that light up when they hit a wall or something else hard. She loves them!
Amelia also loves her Dentastix®. She has gotten really good at “sit” so when we say the command, she is ready for treat time.
Getting her potty trained was a little harder and I had to break out the M&M’s® for myself. If there’s one thing that stresses me out, it’s a dog peeing where she shouldn’t be so having some chocolate on hand is a must! It wasn’t all her fault though, the cats scared her! Can you imagine? Amelia is a 26 pound puppy, the cats are 9 pounds but my female cat is a gangster and she doesn’t play. LOL
It’s also important to have playtime with your new puppy. We got her the balls and a soft toy that also squeaks. We call it her “greeny” because apparently we are not creative namers but she loves it. She drags it throughout the house and even naps with it.
I have created a checklist for you too. All you have to do is save the image to your computer and print it off when you’re ready to take the puppy plunge!
How are you using M&M’s® and Pedigree Dentastix® to make your summer fun? I’d love to hear your ideas!
