Hubs and I both enjoy a good glass of wine. We don’t really know what makes a good wine except that we like it so when we went to the Maui Winery, we didn’t really know what to expect. What we got was some delicious sparkling wine. We didn’t get a chance to try the other wine that is made at the winery so when we got back to Oahu, we decided to find all the local wine we could and taste it. We found 2 from the Big Island and 2 from Maui.
Here’s what we thought:
This is a guava-grape wine from the Big Island and it is very sweet. I think it’s the guava but this wine is almost like a dessert wine. Or who knows, maybe it is a dessert wine? Even though it was the sweetest of the bunch, it was still good.
This is a straight up pineapple wine. No grapes here. The wine smelled like a pineapple from the moment you opened the bottle. It was very tasty and not as sweet at the first wine we tried.
This wine is a pineapple and passion fruit wine. All the wine from Maui is made with Maui Gold Pineapples instead of grapes. This one had a good sweetness to it. After the guava wine, I welcomed this sweetness. Not too over the top but definitely appreciated.
This was the only red wine we could find. It’s from the Big Island and has grapes and this other berry that upon googling scared me based on how it grows in a demon-like vine around a tree. I can’t remember the name so just trust me, it’s like seeing how asparagus grows. The less you know the better. Anyway, the wine tasted like juice. No alcohol taste at all. Completely blah.
So, those are the 4 local wines we found. I also found some spirits that are made in Hawaii and I think that will be the next local booze we try. I hope we don’t find something too amazing because chances of us getting it when we move will probably be slim to none.
Do you have a favorite local wine?
P.S. I was not compensated at all for this post. All opinions are my own.
