When I was 8 or 9, my mom taught me how to use a sewing machine. I needed it for my sewing Girl Scout badge. My mom grew up sewing, my grandma sews, it’s a thing we do. I got a sewing machine for my 23rd birthday and didn’t do much with it except make crafts and quilt. I had forgotten how to read a pattern properly and I was scared. My mom came to visit (babysit on drill weekends) when Hubs was deployed and on one visit, we sewed a dress. Since then, I have been making clothes for the kids, for myself, and I’ve even made stuff for Hubs.
Piglet is pretty easy to sew for, boys usually are but Blueberry, she is fun. Dresses, pretty tops, skirts, you name it. Recently, we went to Hilo and while we were there, I realized that over half her shirts and dresses that I had packed were handmade. And I just grabbed whatever was next in the clothes pile of her dresser. When we got home, I looked and sure enough, she has a ton of handmade clothes. At least 3 times week, she is in something I made.
Did I plan to sew half her wardrobe? Nope. But I sure like it. Going fabric shopping is one of my most favorite things and it’s really sad that Hawaii doesn’t have very good stores because I have to do most online. But, I still do it. And we’re slowly running out of room. Okay, not really but I do have a ton of fabric. I can’t help it. Making Blueberry clothes is so fun and easy.
And don’t worry, Piglet is still getting his share of clothes, I am branching out and trying to sew more knits (perfect for little dudes) and he’s getting some cute pjs too. And who doesn’t love a good pair of pjs?
