In March of last year, I signed up for my first 5K race. It was so fun, I signed up for a 10K the next month. I was hooked. But then we got ready to move and I didn’t have time to race. I held onto the hope that in Hawaii, there would be lots of races. Its summer all the time, it’s always running season. We found a few races but all of them were in downtown Honolulu at the break of dawn. I like running, but I don’t want to have to wake up at 4 am just to get a race in.
Enter Jost Running.
Jost Running does virtual races: you sign up online, run your race, enter your time, and then they send you a medal. Not just any medal, a HUGE medal. The one from October 2013 could be a coaster. They’re not messing around. I was hooked. We ran a 5K together in October and then in November, I ran a 10K by myself.
I reached out to them in January and now, I am working with them this summer! Of course, it’s hard to stay motivated when I’m working full-time, commuting an hour each day, raising 2 kiddos, being a wife, living life, etc. which is why I’m pumped to be working with Jost Running.
For May, the theme was “Brave New Route” and has a ship on it. I don’t know if it’s a pirate ship but I showed it to Piglet and he was instantly smitten. I told him we would have to run or walk 5K to get it and he said “okay.”
For our race, we decided to run/walk to the pool and back. So, we got our swimming gear on, loaded up the stroller, and set off. Piglet was pretty excited and ran for a while. Then we got to an area that he isn’t familiar with walking so he slowed down. Way down. Like, stopped on the side of the road. But that’s okay because I was feeling tired too. I eventually convinced him to keep going, promising him the pool was “just around the corner!”
We made it to the pool (2.5K) in about half an hour. The kids played in the splash pad while the Hubs swam and I watched. It started to rain (because despite what people think it rains EVERY DAY here) and so we packed back up and headed out. Piglet was much more tired on the trip home and took the comfy way out – Daddy’s shoulders and we made it back in about 20 minutes.
This was something we had never done before. Usually we drive to the pool but I was determined to get some good exercise in over the weekend and with the motivation of a medal in the mail from Jost Running, we made it happen!
