Okay, so here’s the thing, we’re trying to eat better. In an effort to do so, I’ve been making paleo dishes and clean eating meals. A lot of them call for Coconut Oil instead of butter. But they don’t tell me WHY I am making this switch. I blindly followed along and about my LouAna, and got to cooking.
Is it healthier?
Let’s breakdown the nutrition:
Butter: 100 calories per 1 Tbs, 11g of fat, 7g saturated fat, 3g monosaturated fat, 30mg cholesterol, 90mg sodium. (I use salted butter)
Coconut Oil: 120 calories per 1 Tbs, 14g of fat, 12g saturated fat, 1g monosaturated fat, 0mg sodium.
So, besides being cholesterol free and having less monosaturated fat, coconut oil seems like a terrible choice. More fat, more calories for the same amount. Mind you, I’m using both these to saute veggies and meat. I don’t taste a difference, except the saltiness factor but that’s because I buy salted butter.
So, is cocout oil just a fad or am I missing something to it’s “better than butter-ness?”
