So, as you may know, Piglet and I used to co-sleep when The Hubster was deployed. It was nice for me but when The Hubster came home, it became apparent that co-sleeping with a very active 13 month old was no longer okay.
Piglet used to sleep the whole night through up until about 7 months and then he just stopped. He would fall asleep at 7:30, wake up and 10:00 and be WIDE AWAKE and inconsolable. I was too tired to fight so he ended up in my bed and we’d sleep until about 9 am.
The Hubster didn’t like being pushed to the edge of the bed so after our trip to Disney World at the beginning on the month, we decided to start sleep training. We bought a twin bed for him but we decided he wasn’t big enough. I was afraid he would fall off in his sleep.
He was sleeping in a toddler bed because when we lowered the crib, he acted so scared and wouldn’t even sit in it for a minute. The Hubster put the crib bars on and buckled down.
First, we did a routine. Bath time, PJ time, a bottle of milk with a story. For the first couple of nights, The Hubster laid in the twin bed with Piglet until he fell asleep and then he transferred him to the crib and left.
He had to go into the room once a night to calm him down after 4-5 hours but now, no more.
In fact, we don’t even hold him until he falls asleep. We read a story and drink some milk then lay for about 20-30 minutes. Piglet usually goes into his crib awake. And if he wakes up in the middle of the night, we just ignore him and he self-soothes in about 10 minutes.
He sleeps from about 9 pm to around 8:30 am and then is up for the day. Nap time, I have decided, starts between 1-2. When he is getting fussy, I put him in the crib, turn on Scout for “10 minutes of bedtime music!” and he falls asleep on his own for 1-2 hours.
It is so nice to have my bed back. I have a Fitbit, which tracks your daily calories and sleep efficiency, and while Piglet was in the bed, I had about 70% sleep efficiency and was woken up 30-45 times a night. I was always tired (duh). Now, I’m hovering around 98% and I only wake up 3-4 times.
I thought I’d never get Piglet out of our bed. And sometimes, I miss those snuggles but I am glad to actually snuggle with The Hubster instead.
