Lately, I’ve been looking for new TV shows to watch. The wonder of Netflix and it’s instant streaming. I discovered “Castle” and “Drop Dead Diva.”
I also discovered “Army Wives.” I knew about it of course, watching Lifetime reruns of HIMYM, I’d seen the ads and I’d always been curious. Every season so far, is on instant stream so I’ve been watching it. I’m on episode 49 of 68. It’s pretty…interesting.
Being in the Army and being an Army brat, I do know about living on an Army post and I know a little bit about the Army Wife culture, because let’s face it, it’s not like regular girl friends. But I know for a fact, it is not like the TV show.
These women seem to not know anything really about the Army. Deployments last “2 years.” One wife stated her husband was on his third 2 year tour but the show premired in 2007 so that’s not really mathematically possible. The general on the show went from 1 star to 2 in a year a half.
And pretty much everything to do with the one female LTC and her pregnancy was so, so wrong. I wish the Army was as kind to me as they were to her. It was ridiculous! First of all, the entire command team is driven around in a humvee, despite being in garrison, but she was still driven around in one – while pregnant! That’s a no-go.
If the show actually had a military person consulting on the show, they would know these things. There’s so many little things that add up to the show being completely fake.
But – it is entertaining. The characters have drawn me in and I don’t want to stop watching because I want to know where the stories are going. So, despite it’s (many gigantic) flaws, it’s still an entertaining show. And I guess I should just chalk it up to entertainment but I am slightly concerned that women who have absolutely no affiliation with the military think that it’s true.
