Before we were able to bring my little piglet home, we had to stay in the hospital with him under a billieblanket because of neonatal jaundice. After a day, he had not yet gotten his levels down and had not been going to the bathroom enough. With plans to breastfeed, it was hard to hear from the doctor that we needed to supplement formula to get his bowels moving. We had to take a billieblanket home with us for a day and it worked. He pooed and peed and got his levels down so we could hold him and play with him instead of watching him in his bed.
While at the hospital, we begged him to go to the bathroom. And he didn’t. Now we’re home, and he won’t stop. We’ve been peed on. We’ve been pooed on. His bed has needed to be changed many times. His clothes. My bed. All that begging really paid off….
Since his jaundice cleared up, we stopped supplementing. Unfortunately, he is only able to latch on one side. So, he drinks from the right and the left just leaks and leaks – wasting all that precious milk. Since, I am going to have to pump when I return to work, I decided to start pumping now. It works for me in many ways. One, the left side isn’t wasted. Two, the right side isn’t always hurting. And three (my favorite), the hubster can feed too. It is hard at night to wake up, pump, feed, change his diaper, and get him back to sleep but I feel better knowing how much he’s eating and there is no better relief than the feeling after an expression. Some people thinking strictly pumping and bottle feeding is bad for baby but for me, it works best and it’s still my milk so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.
