My son was born on the 20th of November, 4 days past his due date. I had a pretty easy pregnancy and I was expecting a pretty easy labor. I had worked out practically up until the day he dropped and figured myself to be in good labor shape.
And….I was sort of right. Our labor plan was to go natural. No epidural, no pain meds. Not because we’re hippies but because I was scared to death of the epidural needle. Even the IV needle did not give me any warm and fuzzies. I know, I know, I’m about to deliver a baby, a tiny needle shouldn’t scare me. But it did.
Unfortunately, I had no “early labor.” I went from 0 to 60 in an hour. There was no gradual build up of pain, which I was hoping for. At check in, I was 2 cm. An hour later, I was 6 cm and in full blown labor. It seemed like the contractions didn’t end. So, I caved and got the epidural. The hubster was glad because I was calm so he could be calm, I was glad because I didn’t have to worry about relaxing.
I checked in at 9 pm, started pushing at 2 am. Baby’s head didn’t want to fit and I needed a vacuum to help him out. At 3:27, our lives changed.
So, the purpose of this is for me to document the struggles and the joys of being a first time, working mom. I’ve only got 6 weeks of maternity leave and then it’s back into the grind of work so I need to drop my baby weight because I have a uniform I need to fit in. I walked into the hospital at 200 pounds (!!) and gave birth to a 6 pounds, 11 ounce baby so there you see my starting point. It’s been a week and with all that I dropped at the hospital, I’m down to 180 pounds. I’ve got many more to go…..
